Stephani Chauvini, also known as Etienne Chauvin, was a French theologian, philosopher, and scholar at the turn of the eighteenth century. Under King Louis XIV, he was persecuted and exiled from France for his Protestant beliefs. Yet Chauvin continued to preach in the Netherlands and Germany for many years. It was there he also grew his reputation as a philosopher. He was known for his early studies in physics. Today his most lasting work is this text: Thesaurus Philosophicum–here published as Lexicon Philosophicum. It is a massive encyclopedia that covers vast swaths of information that were covered under the period’s broad definition of philosophy. The text is in Latin. This second edition, published 1713, is enlarged and expanded. The first edition appeared in 1692. The work is an important reference text from the early Enlightenment in Europe. It remains Chauvin’s most significant work.

This second edition is bound in modern quarter leather over marbled boards, fine. Text block very good, some expert paper repairs, mainly to first quire. Missing engraved title page. Some minor foxing and dampstaining. Very minor wormholes in margins starting page 531, not affecting text. Folio. Large folding plates intact, superb.
