Woodrow Wilson served as the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921. He was the first Southern elected to the presidency after the Civil War. During his years in office, the country faced numerous major challenges, including World War I, the 1918-20 flu pandemic, and the various political movements accelerating during the Progressive Era. His legacy has been mixed over the decades. His major achievements largely involved financial regulation and international policy. His administration created the Federal Reserve System to protect citizens from financial crises caused by banks and corporations. He also lowered tariffs, thereby making goods more affordable. He was also instrumental to the founding of the League of Nations, an international alliance that is considered the progenitor of NATO. Yet he failed in most of his domestic social policies.
