Tom Wolfe was a dynamic writer with interests as wide as any writer before him. His career ascended in the 1960s with The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and other works that described in engaging detail the lived experiences of the 1960s countercultures. Wolfe quickly became associated with New Journalism, which he helped to define–a style of journalism that utilizes literary narrative techniques. In that regard, The Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby is arguably his most important work. It was his first book-length publication. It contains numerous essays previously appearing in the New York Herald Tribune and Esquire. These essays were the first major works establishing Wolfe’s literary career and style in New Journalism. They remain some of his best work.
