Newt Gingrich was a longtime Georgia congressman and the 50th House Speaker in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a Republican political leader, he led initiatives to dismantle social services and cut taxes on capital gains. He was also the primary instigator of numerous government shutdowns during his tenure. He also led the impeachment of President Bill Clinton over Clinton’s affair scandal, which largely backfired as the public and historians alike recognized it as a highly partisan act. Gingrich’s career has since been blamed for elevating political polarization in the United States. He was frequently bombastic, controversial, and combative. In Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America, a self-assured Newt Gingrich describes the greatest challenges and issues facing America after the turn of the twentieth century. Gingrich’s descriptions of the issues are thorough, but his solutions are lacking in detail–a hallmark of the conservative politics he helped to establish. The work was published years after he was pressured to retire from the House of Representatives. His career might have ended there, but through his work with various think tanks and Republican political campaigns, Gingrich has continued to advance polarizing, combative policies.
