Newt Gingrich was a longtime Georgia congressman and the 50th House Speaker in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a Republican political leader, he led initiatives to dismantle social services and cut taxes on capital gains. He was also the primary instigator of numerous government shutdowns during his tenure. He also led the impeachment of President Bill Clinton over Clinton’s affair scandal, which largely backfired as the public and historians alike recognized it as a highly partisan act. Gingrich’s career has since been blamed for elevating political polarization in the United States. He was frequently bombastic, controversial, and combative. In To Renew America, a self-assured Newt Gingrich describes the greatest challenges and issues facing America at the turn of the twentieth century. Gingrich’s descriptions of the issues are thorough, but his solutions are lacking in detail–a hallmark of the conservative politics he helped to establish. The work was published at the onset of his political peak. It underscores his vision and priorities as House Speaker, but just three years later, he was pressured to retire from the House of Representatives after his polarizing views negatively impacted the Republican Party.
This first edition, fourth printing is signed by Gingrich on the title page. It is in very good condition. In the original quarter cloth, near-fine with only fading to top edge. Text block about-fine, only cracking in hinge of title page. In the original dust jacket, very good with only minor soiling, rubbing, and creases.
A very good signed early printing by Newt Gingrich.
