Jesse James is one of the most infamous western outlaws in American history. Cultural depictions have been flattering with James portrayed as an effective Robin Hood character, but the reality was far from admirable. He and his gang originated from pro-Confederate militias in the sparsely populated regions of Kansas and Missouri. After the Civil War, he led numerous robberies and murders, terrorizing people all over what is now the Midwest. Yet his mythology originates from his lifetime as stories of his atrocities morphed into popular legend on the East Coast. When he was murdered by one of his own gang members in 1882, there was a mix of jubilee and sadness. Perhaps no text solidified this mythology than this Frank Triplett’s biography. Published just weeks after James was killed, the work was a sensation. It was also incredibly favorable to Jesse James. Triplett relied on James’s wife and mother as source material, and he simultaneously castigated public officials who were campaigning against popular depictions of Jesse James. Over the years, scholars have returned to Triplett’s biography with much dismay, blaming the work for generational misconceptions of the outlaw. It was left out of print for many years. Still, its significance cannot be overstated, a fact recognized by this signed limited edition by the Swallow Press. It contains the whole text of the 1882 edition alongside illustrations by Jerry Vallez. It also contains an introduction by editor Joseph Snell wherein he acknowledges the role of Triplett’s biography in creating the fantasy of Jesse James.
