For over two decades, Sherman Alexie’s literary career shined bright with an American Book Award, a National Book Award, and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. A Spokane-Coeur d’Alene Native American, Alexie draws extensively from his indigenous culture and community. He is considered by many as one of the best writers of the twenty-first century. His career has stalled since 2018, however, after a series of sexual harassment allegations became public. In response, Alexie apologized and withdrew himself from the public sphere. Still, his works are widely read and praised, including Indian Killer. It is a dark crime novel involving a serial killer who scalps his victims. While the novel is something of a departure from Alexie’s other works, his ability to speak to broader issues and themes is on full display. As the narrative progresses, and fear of the “Indian Killer” grows, a backlash of hate crimes against indigenous Americans becomes an equal threat. It is a “compelling story that skillfully explores alienation, identity, and the dark heart of racial hatred” (back flap).

This first trade edition, first printing, is boldly signed by Sherman Alexie on the title page. It was published simultaneously with a signed limited first edition–identical save the tipped-in signature versus the authentic signature found here. This is a near-fine copy in the original black cloth boards. Only minor rubbing to back board and corners. Text block fine, Alexie’s signature a large scrawl in black pen. Original dust jacket near-fine with only minor rubbing to inside creases, completely unnoticeable from the front.

A near-fine first trade edition signed by the author.
