Alison Bechdel is a cartoonist who garnered a major fanbase with Dykes to Watch Out For, a comic strip that ran from the 1980s to the 2000s. It was an early popular outlet for lesbian representation. It also introduced the Bechdel Test, a popular metric for women’s representation in film. Bechdel’s acclaim rose yet more with the 2006 publication of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. It is Bechdel’s own memoir, told using her signature blend of illustrations and text. The work is noted for its unabashed attention on issues of sexuality, gender identity, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Fun Home was a major bestseller. It won an Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work. It was also nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. In 2015, a Broadway musical adaptation brought the work to new audiences, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical.
