Henry Adams was a historian, professor, and descendent of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. He lived through the Civil War, Western colonization, the Industrial Revolution, and the onset of WWI. During his lifetime, he was praised for his massive nine-volume series on Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Yet today his memoir, The Education of Henry Adams, is his most recognized work. It won him the Pulitzer Prize, awarded posthumously in 1919. A profoundly meditative text, The Education of Henry Adams assesses the monumental changes in society and technology over the course of Adams’ lifetime, providing a lucid glimpse into a certain amount of disillusionment from the era. It is arguably the most important memoir of the early twentieth century.
