Tasseomancy is the method of fortune-telling that relies on the interpretation of tea leaves. It is a superstitious practice dating back centuries. In this promotional pamphlet, the Thomas J. Lipton Co.–a tea distributor–capitalizes on the ancient practice to sell more tea. The work begins with an introduction to tasseomancy by someone purportedly named “Princess Romana.” It then provides a dictionary of tea leaf imagery and examples of how to read the tea leaves in diagrams. The pamphlet is intriguing on at least two levels–it is a unique form of advertising from the early twentieth century and a rare guide to tasseomancy. For any tea drinkers, it would certainly broaden the experience.

This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original wrappers, very good with only minor rubbing to edges and minor soiling. Staples rusted but holding firm. Text block about-fine, only slightly toned.

A very good first edition of the Lipton Co.’s promotional pamphlet on tasseomancy.
