Roger’s Version. Signed by John Updike. Signed Limited First Edition. Knopf. New York, 1986.
$120.00
John Updike is one of the most celebrated American authors of all time. He captured middle class American life with narratives full of accessible characters and truthfully portrayed places. He wrote with subtly brilliant sound and cadence. He published over two dozen novels and short story collections. He also published numerous letters and critical works. For all his achievements, Updike was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes for Fiction, two National Book Awards, several National Book Critics Circle Awards, and many other accolades. In Roger’s Version, Updike offers another character-driven novel of high quality. It tells the story of its titular character’s dysfunctional, incestuous family alongside the story of his graduate student’s attempts at proving the existence of God via computational methods. The work does not offer much in terms of sympathy for its characters. Some initial critics found it to be a lesser novel among Updike’s many works. However, over the years scholars and critics have returned to Roger’s Version, elevating the novel with higher praise.
This signed limited first edition is signed by Updike on the limitation page. It is one of only 350 copies. It is in fine condition. In the original quarter cloth, fine. Text block fine.
