To Kill a Mockingbird. By Harper Lee. Twenty-Third Printing. Lippincott. New York, 1961

$120.00

Harper Lee astounded critics and readers alike with her debut novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The work stood alone in her list of published works until 2015 when Go Set A Watchman, an earlier version of the novel, was published. Widely regarded as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century and required reading for schools across the United States since its publication, To Kill a Mockingbird is a mainstay in the modern western literary canon. It is a heartwarming story that weaves racial injustice, class disparities, gender inequality, and the loss of childhood innocence into a tender, striking coming-of-age tale that has burned its way into the heart of America’s national conscience. To Kill a Mockingbird was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize. It was also adapted into a 1962 film of the same name starring Gregory Peck as the heroic Atticus Finch.

This first edition, twenty-third printing is in good condition. In the original quarter cloth, very good with only fading and rubbing to spine ends. Text block about-fine, only former owner’s bookplate and signature. In the original dust jacket, fair with significant chip to front panel, creases, closed tears, and other chipping.

A good 1961 copy of To Kill a Mockingbird.
