Romeo and Juliet. By William Shakespeare. Illustrated by Byam Shaw. Collector’s Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 2008.

$80.00

The tragedy of Romeo & Juliet is perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous play. It is certainly one of his greatest tragedies with productions and versions reappearing continuously across the globe. It tells the story of its eponymous characters and their forbidden love. Romeo is from the House Montague. Juliet is from the House Capulet. The two Italian houses are epic rivals in all things, and so Romeo and Juliet’s love for one another is thwarted. Yet the young lovers–the perfect archetypes of young lovers–place their affections above all, even if it means their demise. The outcome of their story has subsequently defined romance narratives for centuries. This collector’s edition by the Easton Press is a facsimile of the Bell & Sons 1899 edition. It is in the uniform binding from the 2008 Easton Press publication of a series of Shakespeare’s plays.

This collector’s edition is in fine condition. In the original uniform leather with elaborate gilt stamping, fine. Raised bands. Gilt spine label. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in.

A fine collector’s copy of Romeo & Juliet.
