For many decades, scholars have studied the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and proposed numerous interpretations and explanations for his genius. Yet perhaps none of those scholarly monographs have been so memorable as Timothy R. O’Neill’s The Individuated Hobbit: Jung, Tolkien, and the Archetypes of Middle-Earth. First published in 1979, it famously theorized that all of Tolkien’s Middle Earth could be appropriately interpreted from a Jungian perspective. It contains nine chapters plus a glossary, bibliography, and index. In each section, O’Niell focuses on a section, character, or event from Tolkien’s works and finds correlations to Jung’s archetypes. It is a notable work of literary criticism that stands out among such texts even today.

This first British edition, first printing is in near-fine condition. In the original full cloth, fine. Text block about-fine, only small tears to front endpaper from sticker. In the original dust jacket, fine.

A fine first British edition of The Individuated Hobbit.
