General Colin Powell was an American general and diplomat who served the country for many decades. He served in Vietnam, rising ranks and earning the Soldier’s Medal for bravery. His military career continued into the 1980s, reaching the rank of four-star general. From the 1990s to the 2010s, he transitioned to diplomatic and political positions, becoming the United States’ first Black secretary of state under President George W. Bush. In It Worked for Me, Powell’s second memoir, he reflects on his long career with insights about his successes, challenges, and approaches to leadership. The book is written in short, focused sections. Powell and his co-author, Tony Koltz, describe life lessons with examples drawn from Powell’s experiences. It is an accessible look at one of the most significant military leaders of the last half of the twentieth century.
