The Devil in the White City. By Erik Larson. First Edition, First Printing. Crown. New York, 2003.

$40.00

Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City is one of the most popular non-fiction narratives of the last several decades. It became a major bestseller upon its publication in 2003, and its appeal has continued over the years, with millions more copies sold and a readership expanded largely through personal suggestions and word of mouth. It tells two parallel stories–one about the infamous serial killer, H.H. Holmes, the other about the many architects and city planners who elevated Chicago to new heights during the 1893 Columbian Exhibition. The narratives are connected by time and place, occurring in what was the greatest recreational event of the century. The narrative is also character-driven, told vividly with researched detail. It captures so much about Chicago at the end of the nineteenth century and the World’s Fair. It remains Larson’s most popular work.

This first edition, first printing is in fine condition. In the original paper boards, near fine with only minor fading to edges. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, fine.

A fine first edition of The Devil in the White City.
