In our digital age, we tend to presume widespread accessibility of information and the ubiquity of information resources, but the fact is it took centuries of work to make our richly adorned infosphere possible today. There are numerous projects that contributed to our accessibility of information, but perhaps the most significant is the Encyclopedia Britannica. It was first published between 1768 and 1771 by a group of Scottish businessmen and intellectuals. They came together somewhat haphazardly at first, with the founders, Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell, seeking out the talented editor William Smellie. Soon after, other contributors joined the project, and over the course of several years, they produced arguably the most important text of the Scottish Enlightenment. It remains a major resource of general information. It was not the first encyclopedia, but it stood out in the English-speaking world for its breadth and quality of information. This facsimile edition is a faithful reproduction of the 1768-1771 first edition set. It contains facsimiles of every page and plate. It even has facsimile foxing, reproducing the effect of a true first edition. It may yet feel silly to have the most outdated Encyclopedia Britannica possible–except when one reflects on the incredible achievement of these spectacular resources. Compiled at a time when general information was difficult to acquire, they represent a major step forward in England and abroad.

This facsimile edition set is in fine condition. In the original faux leather boards, near fine with only minor bumping to some panels. Text blocks fine. With all the original foldouts and plates. Publisher’s card laid in.

A fine facsimile of the first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
