The Cultivator’s Handbook of Marijuana. By Bill Drake. First Wingbow Edition, Fourth Printing. Wingbow Press. Berkeley, 1977.

$50.00

The criminalization and prohibition of marijuana throughout the twentieth century led to numerous underground and counterculture initiatives in sharing information about cannabis. Perhaps no text encompasses these initiatives more than The Cultivator’s Handbook of Marijuana. It is considered a cult classic, an authoritative guide to growing your own pot. First published in 1970 by the mysterious Tribe of Thumb in Berkeley, the text was widely circulated and reprinted, reaching cities all over the United States. The purported author is a mystery; no one has been able to verify if Bill Drake exists, or if he was a pseudonym for several contributors. This later printing by the Wingbow Press–the publishing branch of Bookpeople, a major countercultural publishing hub–contains directions for growing marijuana both spiritually and scientifically. It is clearly written by true agriculturalists and cannabis experts. The advertisements and addresses in this text implicate Bookpeople as the originators of the Tribe of Thumb and Bill Drake. It is a fascinating version of a major counterculture text on marijuana.

This first Wingbow edition, fourth printing is in very good condition. In the original green wrappers, very good with some chipping, rubbing, and creases. Stapled binding holding firm. Single gathering still tight, pages unmarked.

A very good prohibition era printing of a marijuana cult classic.
