The Portrait of a Lady. By Henry James. Illustrated by Colleen Browning. Signed Limited Edition. Limited Editions Club. New York, 1967.

$70.00

Of works that shaped twentieth century literature, there is perhaps none more influential than The Portrait of a Lady. It is a novel that bridges literary realism and literary modernism in significant ways. It is also one of Henry James’ best works. The Portrait of a Lady is a character study of the protagonist Isabel Archer. It was initially published in 1881 to critical acclaim. Like many of James’ works, he continually revised after publication, but unlike many of his revisions, those made to The Portrait of a Lady are generally considered improvements. This signed limited edition by the Limited Editions Club pairs the text with superb illustrations by Colleen Browning. She was a celebrated artist in the twentieth century whose works imbue the real with the magical. This volume contains some of her best book illustrations.

This signed limited edition is one of only 1,500 signed by the illustrator, Colleen Browning, on the colophon. It is in about-fine condition. In the original quarter cloth with marbled boards, very good with only rubbing to edges. Text block near-fine, only former owner’s bookplate to front pastedown. Top edge dyed red. In the publisher’s original slipcase, about-fine with only chipping to edges. With the publisher’s original pamphlet laid in.

An about-fine LEC edition of The Portrait of a Lady.
