Tony Hillerman was an American novelist who wrote a prolific number of detective novels and true crime non-fiction. His works are deeply infused with Southwest culture. His characters are emblematic of the place and his depictions of the Southwest are sincere. He is considered one of the most notable authors from New Mexico where he lived and worked for most of his life. For his contributions, he won many genre fiction awards, including many Anthony Awards and Agatha Awards. Hillerman was also a decorated veteran, earning a Purple Heart in WWII. In Talking God, the ninth installment of his Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee series, Hillerman crafts a riveting murder mystery starting in New Mexico. But as Navajo Tribal detectives Leaphorn and Chee follow several clues and leads, they end up in Washington DC where a Chilean assassin enacts revenge. The novel was a bestseller and one of the most popular in the series. It embodies much of Hillerman’s style and subject interests.
