Lysistrata. By Aristophanes. A New Version by Gilbert Seldes. Illustrations by Pablo Picasso. Illustrated Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 1983.

$65.00

Aristophanes’ classic comedy follows both Athenian and Spartan women in their attempts to end the Peloponnesian War by withholding sex from their husbands. A romp, even by Classical standards, Lysistrata is one of the most popular comedies in history. It has been retold for millennia. In this new version, the text from Gilbert Seldes’ popular Broadway script is paired perfectly with illustrations by Pablo Picasso. It is a noteworthy production originally issued by the Limited Editions Club in 1934. Picasso’s drawings brilliantly synthesize Greco-Roman and modernist styles. It is some of his finest work.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original full red leather, especially fine with gilt stamping. Raised bands. Gilt spine label. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. With the publisher’s original pamphlet and blank bookplate laid in.

A fine volume containing some of Picasso’s greatest book illustrations.
