Moby Dick; Or, the Whale is often cited as the Great American Novel. Many authors in the 20th century, such as  D.H. Lawrence and Ralph Ellison, praised Moby-Dick as one of the most important novels ever written. Yet during Melville’s lifetime, the work was mostly disregarded. The literary tastes of the mid-1800s considered the fragmented narrative an unredeemable flaw. Plus, a less complete British edition appeared first, in 1851, and it did not include the crucial epilogue describing Ishmael’s, the narrator’s, escape from death, rendering the whole work illogical. This initial reception colored all later reviews, even after the first American edition (which was complete) was published. Ultimately, the work went largely unread until the 1920s when Modernists reconsidered the fragmented narrative with their new tastes and saw its other masterful qualities, thereby revitalizing interest in the work and elevating it to its prestigious status as one of the best novels ever written. This collector’s edition by the Easton Press recognizes that status–it’s part of the publisher’s “100 Greatest Works Ever Written” series. For any collector of great canonized literature, it is a crucial volume.

This collector’s edition is in fine condition. In the original slate leather boards, elaborately gilt stamped. Raised bands. Gilt edges. All fine. Text block fine. Silk moire endpapers very nearly fine, only minor fading to top edge. Silk bookmark sewn in. With the publisher’s original bookplate laid in. Boardman Robinson’s illustrations are a fine pairing with the text.

A fine collector’s edition of one of the greatest works in American Literature.
