John le Carré, pen name for David John Moore Cornwell, was a British author whose espionage novels rank among the best ever written. His literary career began in the 1960s when he was also working as an MI5 and MI6 agent. Through these experiences, le Carré was able to craft genius espionage narratives that were in many ways authentic, or at least deeply informed by the true nature of espionage work. In The Little Drummer Girl, he presents a quintessential example of the genre. It concerns Martin Kurtz, an Israeli spy, as he pursues a Palestinian terrorist named Khalil. When Kurtz enlists the help of a talented young actress named Charlie to lure Khalil into capture, the morality of the protagonists is compromised. Charlie is particularly torn about her role in the conflict, operating as a lens through which le Carré assesses the generational struggle in the Middle East. Published just after his major successes with the George Smiley trilogy, The Little Drummer Girl remains one of le Carré’s best standalone novels. It was adapted to film in 1984 and adapted to television in 2018.
