John Steinbeck is a titan of American literature. His career saw dozens of book-length publications, dozens of bestsellers, a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Prize. In The Moon Is Down, Steinbeck provides a unique contribution to his list of novels. In many ways, it represents his entry into the American war effort during WWII. It is a story about the military occupation of a small European town. The work is noted for its spirit of resistance. It was quickly adapted to film and theater and became a notable part of the effort to boost national morale. The next year, Steinbeck became a war correspondent and quickly saw the line of duty. He returned to the United States wounded in 1944. He went on to write some of the best novels of his career.
