Seven Gothic Tales. By Isak Dinesen. Illustrations by Majeska. Limited First Illustrated Edition. Smith & Haas. New York, 1934.

$120.00

Baroness Karen Blixen, better known today by her pen name Isak Dinesen, was a Danish author who received major critical and commercial acclaim in the first half of the twentieth century. Her short fiction was widely regarded as some of the best from the era, and her memoir, Out of Africa, remains a classic. Yet her first book, Seven Gothic Tales, established her literary career. It contains a series of exceptional stories with supernatural and romantic elements. This limited first illustrated edition was published the same year as the first edition. It contains exceptional work by Majeska–the pseudonym for Henriette Stern, an American illustrator who produced some of the best book illustrations from her era.

This limited first illustrated edition is in very good condition. In the original full cloth, very good with only fading to spine, rubbing to corners and head of spine. Text block near-fine, only former owner’s inscription to front free endpaper and some tape residue and foxing to endpapers. This copy is number 256 of only 1,010 printed.

A very good limited first illustrated edition of Seven Gothic Tales.
