The Song of Songs, sometimes called the Song of Solomon, is one of the most widely read Biblical poems and a unique text in both the Hebrew and Christian canons. It contains no explicit references to laws or covenants, but rather invokes erotic love between two lovers through beautiful imagery and verse. Many denominations interpret the poem as allegory–as either a representation of God’s love for Israel, the church, or his devoutest followers. Still others read the poem for its literary brilliance. In any case, it has inspired artists and worshippers for millennia. In this early twentieth century illustrated edition, the text in English is paired with original photogravures by Gilbert James. James was a prolific British illustrator who completed a series of photogravure editions, including his acclaimed Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. This volume is one of his series. Yet it is also a standout illustrated edition of The Song of Songs, a wonderful version of the text.

This illustrated edition is in very good condition. In the original light blue cloth, very good with gilt embossing and dark blue frame to front board and spine. Only minor rubbing to edges and minor staining to boards. Text block near-fine, only some glue showing between gatherings. James’ photogravures superb.

A very good illustrated edition of The Song of Songs by Gilbert James.
