Sophie’s Choice. By William Styron. First Trade Edition, First Printing. Random House. New York, 1979.

$35.00

American author William Styron published literary classics in the twentieth century. He is most remembered for The Confessions of Nat Turner and Sophie’s Choice. They won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award, respectively. Yet both works met controversy, and Styron subsequently became known as a polarizing author despite the unanimous praise of his command of prose and characterization. In Sophie’s Choice, his last novel, critics largely aimed their sights on the work’s portrayal of the Holocaust and for its sexually explicit content. Still, the work became a bestseller and its detractors could not deny its brilliantly depicted protagonist. In 1982, it was also adapted to film starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, with Meryl Streep winning Best Actress.

This first trade edition, first printing is in good condition. In the original full maroon cloth, very good with only fading, rubbing to back board, and minor puncture to spine. Text block good, very slightly cocked and former owner’s inscription to front free endpaper. In the original dust jacket, very good with only minor fading to spine and minor chipping and creases.

A good first trade edition of Sophie’s Choice.
