Leaves of Grass. By Walt Whitman. Facsimile Edition. Eakins Press. New York, 1966.

$60.00

Leaves of Grass is an expansive collection of poetry, with themes of life, individuality, and the natural world. It is widely regarded as the best American poetry of the nineteenth century, and certainly Whitman’s greatest work. Whitman self-published various editions, each with new lines and sections, making it one of the most variable texts between editions. This facsimile comes from the true first edition, however, from 1855–a monumental volume designed entirely by Whitman himself. It also contains his famous author’s portrait which caused a sensation in the 1850s for its everyman’s pose and audacious figure.

This facsimile edition is in fine condition. In the original green cloth boards, finely embossed in the exact style as the 1855 first edition. Text block fine. In the original slipcase, near-fine with only bumping to corners.

A fine facsimile of the first edition of Leaves of Grass.
