In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, numerous US and European colonizers established the field of American anthropology. Driven by a fascination with Native American cultures, the field quickly began documenting Native legends into written form. While mostly well-intentioned, it is important to note that these early anthropologists generally failed to credit their sources. Many also overlooked the fact that their interpretations of these stories were filtered through a colonial, Anglo-European lens, making them largely void of cultural context. Still, the transcribers of this volume were important figures who engaged closely with Native people. Henry R. Schoolcraft, for example, was married to Bamewawagezhikaquay of Ojibwe heritage. She provided him access to Native stories, and wrote many of her own versions as well. George Bird Grinnell was a conservationist who helped garner support for the preservation of bison. His Native sources were many, including George Bent of the Cheyenne. Frank Boas introduced the theory of cultural relativism, a critical response to ideologies of scientific racism that permeated his era. In his documentation of Native stories, he drew heavily from close confidant George Hunt of Tlingit heritage. These sources, unfortunately, are not cited in this volume. But it would benefit all readers to acknowledge them, because they are some of the foundation of this important text of Native American Legends.
