Benito Mussolini was one of the most consequential fascist dictators of the twentieth century. He rose to power after the infamous 1922 March on Rome–a coup-d’etat that put Mussolini and his National Fascist Party in charge of Italy for two decades. As Prime Minister, he utilized quintessential fascist and dictatorial strategies to maintain power. He regularly obscured truth, scapegoated marginalized groups, and changed policy to suit the opportunity. As Hitler’s greatest ally in Europe, he also abetted in some of the most horrific tragedies of all time. In hindsight, Mussolini’s demagoguery is obvious, yet many people today fall for the same tired appeals made by similarly bombastic politicians. For this reason, and for its historical significance, Mussolini’s Autobiography is an important example of political reframing through memoir, a piece of propaganda in the form of prose. Written several years into Mussolini’s reign over Italy, the work was promoted and partially ghostwritten by Richard Washburn Child, a U.S. ambassador to Italy and fascist apologist who did not live to see the worst consequences of his political maneuverings through WWII. The work covers Mussolini’s childhood to his early political career, mythologizing and misrepresenting his life and political action the entire way. Despite its inaccuracies, it is a historically important volume, showcasing how one dictator preferred to present himself to Italy and the rest of the world.

This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original green cloth, very good with only minor bumping and rubbing to corners, and minor rubbing and soiling to front board. Gilt stamped front board and spine bright. Text block about-fine, only minor occasional creases and small closed tears, and some spacing between gatherings. Without the scarce original dust jacket.

A very good first edition of Mussolini’s only autobiography.
