The Yearling. By Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. Pulitzer Prize Edition, First Printing. Scribners. New York, 1939.

$120.00

The Yearling was published after Rawlings’ other projects were repeatedly rejected by her editor, the acclaimed Maxwell Perkins. Yet the arduous road to publication paid off: The Yearling won the Pulitzer Prize and was adapted to film twice–once in 1946 and again in 1994. It has remained one of the most endearing novels of the last 100 years, with children and adults alike rereading the work and finding its protagonist, Jody Baxter, his family, and the fawn he adopts a deeply moving cast of characters. In some ways a brutal bildungsroman, in other ways a heartfelt tale of familial bonds, The Yearling is Rawlings’ best work. This Pulitzer Prize edition–technically the first illustrated trade edition–was published shortly after it had been awarded the Pulitzer Prize. It contains numerous illustrations by one of the best book illustrators of the day, N.C. Wyeth. The imagery has become iconic, contributing to the conceptions of the films and other illustrated editions over the decades. It is some of Wyeth’s best work.

This Pulitzer Prize edition, first printing is in good condition. In the original full cloth with decorated front board, very good with only crease along spine and soiling to back board. Text block good with illustrated endpapers and Wyeth plates superb, only slightly cocked. In the original dust jacket, very good with only chipping, creases, and closed tears along edges. This illustrated trade edition is preceded only by the first edition and a signed limited illustrated edition of only 770 copies.

A good first illustrated trade edition of The Yearling.
