The Pearl. By John Steinbeck. Drawings by Jose Clemente Orozco. First Edition, First Printing. Viking. New York, 1947.

$320.00

John Steinbeck is a titan of American literature with numerous major contributions to American literary history. He is one of the few people to win both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize. His everyman characters and sprawling, socially aware plots capture quintessential aspects of the American experience in the twentieth century. His prose, rich yet unadorned, contains a mastery of the English language on par with any writer before or after him. In The Pearl, Steinbeck provides one of his most concise works. It follows a Mexican pearl diver named Kino who struggles to protect his family and his hard-earned pearls from thieves. Perhaps best compared to Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, The Pearl is a narrative sympathetic to its protagonist and wholly focused on symbolic and thematic action. It is an important volume among Steinbeck’s works.

This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original red buckram boards, about-fine with only minor bumping and rubbing to corners and spine ends. Text block fine. In the original first-issue dust jacket, very good with toning, minor chipping to corners and edges, and a small closed tear to back panel.

A very good first edition by John Steinbeck.
