Miracle on 34th Street. By Valentine Davies. First Edition, First Printing. Harcourt, Brace, & Co. New York, 1947.

$650.00

Miracle on 34th Street is a Christmas classic, one revisited every year in its book and movie forms. In 1947, 20th Century Fox worked with writer Valentine Davies to produce the film version. It was a tremendous success, winning multiple Academy Awards. Davies also penned this novella version of the story, and it too was a tremendous success. With the film and book released simultaneously, the Christmas of 1947 was largely defined by the Miracle on 34th Street. It is the story of a disillusioned woman and her daughter as they meet Kris Kringle, a Macy’s store Santa Claus who proves himself to be more authentic than anyone could have imagined. The narrative certainly elevated the department store Santa tradition in American culture. It has also been remade into several films, television shows, and books in the last century.

This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original buckram boards, fine with Santa Claus blind-stamped to front board and silver spine label. Text block very nearly fine, only former bookseller stamp and penned date to front endpaper. Copyright page shows “first edition” and no mention of subsequent printers or printings, indicating this is a true first edition, first printing. In the original dust jacket, very good with closed tears and creases along edges, and chipping and rubbing, mainly to spine. A first-issue dust jacket with movie advertisement to back flap.

A scarce first edition of Miracle on 34th Street.
