The Essays. By Sir Francis Bacon. Collector’s Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 1980.

Sherwood Anderson was an American author best known for Winesburg, Ohio, a closely connected series of short stories set in the eponymous town. Anderson grew up in the Midwest. His experiences and familiarity with Midwestern culture deeply informed his fictions, so much so that Winesburg, Ohio is often cited as one of the most quintessential literatures of the region. The characters are vivid, polarizing, and engaging. The town is pure in its reflections of the heartland. For all of these reasons, it is widely considered one of the best books from the early twentieth century. This limited edition by the Franklin Library recognizes the importance of Winesburg, Ohio, as part of its 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature series. It pairs the text with brilliant plates by Miki, making this edition one of the best renditions of the text ever produced. For any collector of regional or American literature, it is an essential volume.

This limited edition is in fine condition. In the original full green leather boards, finely gilt stamped. Gilt spine label. Raised bands. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. Former owner’s bookplate affixed to half-title page. Miki illustrations superb.

A fine collector’s copy of Winesburg, Ohio.
