Twice-Told Tales. By Nathaniel Hawthorne. Illustrations by Valenti Angelo. Illustrated Edition. Heritage Press. New York, 1966.

$36.00

Nathaniel Hawthorne published many short stories (most of them anonymously) in periodicals through the 1830s, yet he did not attribute his works or collect them in book-form until 1837. The result is this short story collection: Twice-Told Tales, a significant early contribution in the tradition of American short story writing. The stories are some of Hawthorne’s best, including “Young Goodman Brown”, “The Birthmark”, “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”, and many others. The initial response was positive, but the historical perspective is much better. Twice-Told Tales are proof of Hawthorne’s genius. They showcase his talent across various subjects and establish him as one of America’s great early short fiction writers. This illustrated edition pairs the stories with spectacular illustrations by Valenti Angelo. It is a handsome modern edition of the work, one that appeals to Hawthorne admirers and, more generally, short story readers alike.

This illustrated edition is in near fine condition. In the original half cloth boards, fine. Text block near fine, only former owner’s bookplate to front pastedown. In the original slipcase, very nearly fine with only sparse chips and spots.

A handsome collector’s copy of Twice-Told Tales.
