Great Expectations. By Charles Dickens. Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. Illustrated Edition. Heritage Press. New York, 1939.

$38.00

Charles Dickens is a defining figure of the Victorian era and one of the best English authors of all time. His literary star rose in the 1830s with the serialization of the Pickwick Papers. It led to international stardom and a consistent readership which consumed his many other novels. Dickens fundamentally changed publication in the 19th century, popularizing like no one before him the serialized form of the novel. His works have remained classics as well, including A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and many others. In this volume, Great Expectations, the Easton Press recognizes one of his best works by placing it as part of their 100 Greatest Books Ever Written series. Great Expectations was Dickens’ penultimate novel. It is an orphan’s tale, centering its narration on Pip as he grows up in Kent and London. When compared to Oliver Twist, Dickens’ second novel and also an orphan’s tale, Great Expectations reveals the great author’s development and maturity after a lifetime of publication.
