First Flights to the Moon is a collection of classic sci-fi stories grouped together by their subject matter: lunar travel. Published in 1970, the work connects the breathtaking cultural moment of the Apollo moon landings to a long and fascinating history of sci-fi imaginings of lunar travel. Contributors include some of the greatest sci-fi authors of all time. In order of their stories in the collection, authors include: David Grinnell, Vic Phillips, Isaac Asimov, Paul W. Fairman, A. Bertram Chandler, Larry Niven, Edmund Cooper, John Brunner, Arthur C. Clarke, and Thomas M. Disch. It is easily one of the best sci-fi short story collections ever published, a rare thematic and subject overview of the genre’s interest in the moon. The collection was compiled and edited by Hal Clement, one of hard sci-fi’s most recognizable authors. Clement was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1998. In his foreword to the collection, Clement makes “no apology for the selection of the stories. Others could have been used, but these seemed to fit best into the points about prophecy which we wanted to make” (xiii). For any sci-fi collector or those interested in lunar exploration, it is an essential (albeit scarce) volume.

This first edition, first printing is signed by editor Hal Clement on the title page. It is in fine condition. In the original cloth boards, fine. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, fine.

A fine signed first edition of the classic collection of short stories about the moon. Scarce.
