$40.00

Leo Tolstoy is without question one of the towering figures of literature across all nationalities and eras. Many consider him the best novelist of all time. His major works have both challenged and inspired readers for generations–perhaps none more so than War and Peace. It is a massive tome set during the Napoleonic Wars that covers history, philosophy, and numerous character perspectives. First written in Tolstoy’s native Russian in the 1860s, it was soon translated into English and various other languages, and read across the globe. This illustrated edition by the Heritage Press borrows the text from the famous Maude translation as well as Verestchagin’s acclaimed nineteenth century illustrations. Louise and Aylmer Maude were personally acquainted with Tolstoy. Their translation was crucial to his international renown. This edition also provides Fritz Eichenberg’s modern pen and ink drawings, making it a spectacular combination of both old and new aspects of the work’s long publication history.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original full cloth boards with decorative silver stamping and spine label, fine. Text block fine, only former owner’s stamp to front endpaper. Containing both Verestchagin’s and Eichenberg’s illustrations, some in folding plates. In the original slipcase, very good with only foxing, fading, minor dampstaining, and small chips.

A fine illustrated edition of War and Peace.
