To Kill A Mockingbird. By Harper Lee. First edition, Sixteenth Printing. Lippincott. New York, 1961.

$175.00

Harper Lee astounded critics and readers alike with her debut novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The work stood alone in her list of published works until 2015 when Go Set A Watchman, an earlier version of the novel, was published. Widely regarded as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century and required reading for schools across the United States since its publication, To Kill a Mockingbird is a mainstay in the modern western literary canon. It is a heartwarming story that weaves racial injustice, class disparities, gender inequality, and the loss of childhood innocence into a tender, striking coming-of-age tale that has burned its way into the heart of America’s national conscience. To Kill a Mockingbird was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize. It was also adapted into a 1962 film of the same name starring Gregory Peck as the heroic Atticus Finch.

This first edition, sixteenth printing is in good condition. In the original half cloth boards, good with only minor dampstaining to foot of boards and rubbing to one corner. Text block very good, only minor dampstaining to first several gatherings. In the original dust jacket, good with some chipping, closed tears, and creases.

A good early printing of Harper Lee’s classic.
