A White House Diary. Signed by Lady Bird Johnson. First Edition, First Printing. Holt, Rinehart, & Winston. New York, 1970.

$65.00

First Lady of the United States, Lady Bird Johnson, ushered in a new era for the position. While many previous First Ladies were equally motivated and effective, Lady Bird Johnson was the first to operate using a political team and structure not unlike those of elected officials. While First Lady, she developed education policy and conservation policy. She also had the ear of her husband, President Lyndon Baines Johnson–so much so that it is widely believed that she convinced him to run on the democratic ticket in 1964 while other confidants could not do so. In A White House Diary, these events and more–from John F. Kennedy’s assassination to LBJ’s final year in office–are intimately described. It ranks high among memoirs by First Ladies and remains one of the best inside looks at the LBJ presidency.

This first edition is in very good condition. It is signed by Lady Bird Johnson on a bookplate to the front endpaper. In the original half cloth boards, very good with only minor crease to spine and minor dampstaining to foot of spine. Text block near fine, only minor creasing to frontmatter. In the original first state dust jacket, very good with only minor creases, closed tears, and chipping to edges.

A very good signed first edition of Lady Bird Johnson’s A White House Diary.
