Last Flight. By Amelia Earhart. First Edition, First Printing. Harcourt, Brace, & Co. New York, 1937.

Amelia Earhart is perhaps the most famous aviator in history. In her lifetime, she was one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world. She broke numerous aviation records in the twentieth century, published bestselling aviation books, and famously supported women’s organizations and the advancement of women’s rights. She was a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt and a visiting scholar at Purdue University. Sadly, her legacy has been punctuated by her tragic disappearance during a flight over the Pacific Ocean–her last flight, which is catalogued in detail in this volume, compiled by her husband in 1937. It contains her prewritten, autobiographical chapters and transcripts she sent by cable during her ill-fated journey over the Pacific. Last Flight has been meticulously studied since its publication. Especially in the decade after its publication, readers scoured the text for clues about her disappearance. Most serious observers believe she crashed and sank while searching for Howland Island, but numerous other possibilities have been proposed. Most recently, for example, researchers have suggested that she became marooned and died on Nikumaroro Island some 400 miles south of her intended destination. Yet no definitive proof is available. Ultimately, the only known details of her last flight are contained in this book, making it one of the most sought-after aviation texts ever published.

This first edition is in good condition. In the original red cloth boards, very good with only minor soiling to back board, fading to spine and top edges, and some rubbing to top edge. Text block about fine with only spots to fore-edges. In the original dust jacket, good with chipping and closed tears to edges and fading to spine.
