David Copperfield. By Charles Dickens. Illustrated by Paul Degen. Illustrated Edition. Franklin Library. Franklin Center, 1980.

$45.00

David Copperfield is undoubtedly one of Charles Dickens’ greatest works. It follows the titular character as he describes his life in the first person. Like Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, it is a bildungsroman, yet what sets it apart is its maturity and autobiographical qualities, with plot points mimicking events in Dickens’ own life. It was also Dickens’ first novel written entirely in the first person. Published around the height of his career, David Copperfield was initially ranked somewhere in the middle of his list of works, but as readers over the decades returned to the novel, David Copperfield eventually garnered such critical praise that it is now considered by many to be his masterpiece. This illustrated edition is a spectacular version of the text with Paul Degen’s full-page watercolor illustrations rendering the narrative beautifully.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original half faux leather spine with gilt stamped cloth boards. Raised bands. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Printed marble endpapers and silk bookmark sewn in. Degen’s illustrations superb.

A handsome collector’s copy of Dickens’ classic.
