Candide. By Voltaire. Illustrations by Sylvain Sauvage. Collector’s Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 1977.

$45.00

Candide is Voltaire’s magnum opus, a slim work with enormous consequence on literary culture, both in France and the rest of Europe and America. Through satire and simple storytelling, Voltaire criticizes many prevailing philosophical theories of the Enlightenment and ends his work with no obvious philosophic formation in the minds of his characters–a brilliant denouement, one continually contemplated ever since it was published.

This 1977 Collector’s Edition by the Easton Press is in about-fine condition. Illustrated throughout by Sylvain Sauvage. Bound in full gray blue leather with 22k gilt stamped boards and spine. Boards about-fine with only slight bowing. Text block fine. All edges gilt. Stunning marbled endpapers and green silk ribbon sewn in.

A handsome collector’s copy of Voltaire’s classic.
