The Lost World. By Arthur Conan Doyle. First English Trade Edition, First Printing. Hodder & Stoughton. London, 1912.

$660.00

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the most important genre authors of all time. His Sherlock Holmes series has remained popular for over a century and defined detective fiction for countless readers. Likewise, his Professor Challenger series has stirred our cultural fascination with zoology and is largely credited with popularizing the “lost world” subgenre of science fiction and fantasy. In particular, this novel, The Lost World, is cited as the keystone title of the subgenre and Doyle’s greatest work alongside the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles. The Lost World regales readers with the exciting adventures of Professor Challenger as he explores deep into the wilds of South America where an isolated land still contains dinosaurs and ape-like people. The story has been adapted to various media, including film, television, cartoons, and so on. Our cultural imaginings of pterodactyls, carnivorous dinosaurs, and apemen can largely be traced to The Lost World. It inspired Jurassic Park, King Kong, and many other creature narratives. The first English trade edition was limited to only 10,000 copies, of which this is one. It is the first book to feature Professor Challenger, the start of Conan Doyle’s second great character-driven series.

This first English trade edition is in very good condition. In the original blue cloth boards, very good with only rubbing to edges and front board, and minor crease along center of spine. Text block good with scattered foxing, especially to fore edges and first gathering. Hinges just starting. Minor dampstaining to gutters. All eight tipped in plates present including frontispiece.

A very good first English trade edition of The Lost World, Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic.
