A Boy’s Will. Signed by Robert Frost. First American Edition, Second State. Holt & Co. New York, 1915.

Robert Frost is one of the most important figures of American poetry. His poems bridge the gap between nineteenth century forms and twentieth century modernism. His command of line and attention to the sounds and patterns of colloquial speech have made him one of the most popular poets of all time. Frost also captured essential aspects of rural life in New England, following a tradition of great poets such as Longfellow, Thoreau, and Emerson. Frost is the only poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry an astounding four times. Equally astounding were his 31 nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature, none of which resulted in the award. In A Boy’s Will, Frost established his voice and garnered the praise of his contemporaries, including Ezra Pound and William Butler Yeats. It is Frost’s first book of poetry. As with nearly all of Frost’s books, it was first published in England, but after the success of his second book, North of Boston, Holt & Co. released this first American edition. With both books on the American market simultaneously, critics noted that Frost had appeared as an apparition and overtaken American poetry in a matter of months. The success established his career and led to many decades of great poetry, making A Boy’s Will one of the most important volumes of the twentieth century.

This first American edition, second state, is signed by Robert Frost on the front free endpaper. He also inscribed the location: “Ann Arbor Michigan”. This copy is in very good condition.
