The Purple Prince of Oz is the 26th book in the Oz Series. It follows Randy of Regalia as he travels to a different world altogether: Pumperdink, where a royal family is enchanted by a wicked fairy. Randy aids them alongside Kabumpo, the beloved elephant. It is one of Ruth Plumly Thompson’s most adored contributions to the series. It is also her first book to follow only characters of her own creation, excluding the iconic characters of L. Frank Baum’s earlier works, such as Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, etc. Ruth Plumly Thompson wrote over a dozen Oz books in the 1920s and 30s. Her style is notably different from Baum’s yet equally delightful. Her stories are usually compared to traditional folk tales or fairy tales whereas Baum’s conceptions were more in line with fantasy and larger epic narratives. The Purple Prince of Oz is a prime example of this difference. It is episodic, moral, and magical–a fairy tale of exceptional quality, standing out among the many acclaimed titles in the Oz Series.

This first edition, first state is in good condition. In the original blue cloth boards with illustrated front pastedown, very good with only rubbing to spine ends, corners and edges, and minor spots and rubbing to pastedown. Text block good with some foxing, hinges started along endpapers, back endpaper sympathetically taped, other small closed tears, none affecting text. Some rubbing to fore-edges. Former owner’s inscription erased from front matter but still showing. Without the scarce original dust jacket, as usual.

A good first edition of The Purple Prince of Oz, a classic in the Oz Series.
