The Collecting of Guns. Edited by James E. Serven. First Edition, First Printing. Stackpole Books. Harrisburg, 1964.

$45.00

The Collecting of Guns is an incredibly comprehensive guidebook and history on firearms with notable contributions from over a dozen firearm collectors. These collectors have a wide range of expertise, with some specializing in Old World, pre-1700s weapons, while others are focused specifically on 19th/20th century manufacturers. With profuse illustrations and a careful index, the work allows for easy reference. It also provides a useful timeline and history of firearms with chapters describing their chronological development and the history of certain manufacturers. Unsurprisingly, the work is nothing but flattering to the history of firearms, calling them “vital tools in shaping world history” (pg. 5). Special emphasis is given to American companies that have glamorized and popularized firearms to the point that many Americans no doubt feel inadequate without them. For all these reasons and more, The Collecting of Guns is a crucial volume for any gun aficionado.

This first edition is in near fine condition. In the original full cloth boards, very nearly fine with only minor fading. Text block fine. Owner’s signature page left blank. In the publisher’s original slipcase, about fine with only crease to spine, rubbing to corners and edges, and spots and pasted labels.

A near fine first edition of The Collecting of Guns.
