The Complete Poems. By Elizabeth Bishop. First Edition, First Printing. Farrar, Straus, & Giroux. New York, 1969.

$90.00

Elizabeth Bishop stood apart from her contemporaries of 20th century American poetry. She mastered imagery, tone, and a distant perspective that captured universal truths rather than the more confessional notes that were common during her era. But while she wrote in different channels than many of her contemporaries, her work saw some of the most critical acclaim. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the National Book Award, the latter for this volume, The Complete Poems. It provides some of her earlier works along with previously unpublished poems. It is largely considered one of the best collections of poetry of the last 100 years. The first printing saw only 5,500 copies, but after winning the National Book Award for Poetry, subsequent printings proliferated.

This first edition, first printing is in near fine condition. In the original blue cloth boards, near fine with only very minor fading to edges. Text block near fine, only former owner’s signature and very sparse marginalia. In the original dust jacket, near fine with only minor creasing to top edge, rubbing to top edge, and one small closed tear.

A near fine first edition of Elizabeth Bishop’s Complete Poems.
