e.e. cummings is one of the most important American poets of the twentieth century, a leading figure in the Modernist literary movement and an innovator of free-form poetry. Like many poets of his era, cummings was influenced by Surrealism, Dadaism, and Imagism, but unlike his contemporaries, cummings applied these new waves of thinking primarily to syntax, punctuation, and typography. For example, some of his most lasting poems, such as “r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r” and “i carry your heart with me”, completely surprise readers for their coherence despite any first impressions of illogic. In this volume, his Collected Poems, various periods of his artistic development appear in clearly labeled sections. Many of the poems are difficult to decipher, but ultimately there are none without rich meanings or structures. Early editions of his collected poems are quite scarce. First published in 1938 during rationing periods, cummings’ Collected Poems elude many collectors.

This early edition is in very good condition. In the original full red cloth boards, very good with some spots, fading to spine, and dampstaining to head of boards. Text block near fine, only former owner’s signature to front pastedown. In the scarce original dust jacket, very good with closed tears, chips, and rubbing to edges, some fading to spine, and foxing to back flap.

A scarce early copy of the Collected Poems of e.e. cummings.
