Lew Wallace became one of America’s bestselling authors in the late-nineteenth century when Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ ascended to international acclaim. Wallace had already lived a full life before the success of Ben-Hur. He was a lawyer, a Union general during the Civil War, the governor of the New Mexico Territory, and he had published other works of literature. Yet Ben-Hur has come to define Wallace’s legacy. The work is a historical fiction, recounting the life of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince enslaved by the Romans. Ben-Hur’s narrative runs parallel to the life of Jesus, the events unfolding in recognizable Christian scenes but from Ben-Hur’s outside perspective. The work remained popular for an astounding number of decades, and with the monumental film adaptation in 1959, it has continued to define Christian fiction well into the 21st century. This illustrated edition pairs the text with Joe Mugnaini’s brilliant illustrations. Published after the film, this volume contributes to a lasting relevancy for Ben-Hur.

This illustrated edition is in about fine condition. In the original decorated cloth boards, about fine with only fading to spine. Text block fine. Mugnaini’s illustrations superb. With the publisher’s original Sandglass pamphlet laid in. In the original slipcase, very good with only fading to edges, some rippling in the pastedown, and minor chipping to one end.

A spectacular illustrated edition of Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
